Extras are used to create realistic depictions of public places, scenes in restaurants, courtrooms, hallways, airports-these places are usually filled with extras walking and sitting, eating (miming) in the background.
All able-bodied citizens who want to be in the movies are urged to register. Extra work refers to employment as a background actor in film and television.
Breaking into the movie biz can be daunting. Being an extra is a great way to do it if you don't have much experience. It's a chance to network and get in the middle of the action. The business of background acting is one way of stepping into the movie business and making money. It's a real job, and one of the few jobs you get that is both work and fun. You leave your comfort zone and venture into the world of movie-making imagination, where things are not always as they seem (or are they?).

Hollywood has set up shop in Michigan due to the tax incentives our fair State now offers filmmakers. Clint Eastwood was one of the first to come in and shoot a movie here as a result of the tax breaks and plenty more are following suit. The Michigan Extras Database was created as a support service to this fabulous business and is now open to any agent or casting director who needs extras. Watch any movie and start counting all the people you see who don't talk on screen. It's practically impossible — especially in a major crowd scene! Of course, sometimes extras do get a lot of on-screen or "face" time, wear elaborate costumes and become an integral part of a film.
Best of all... anyone can be an EXTRA. Your mother, your brother, your crazy neighbor, your best friend, your grandpa and YOU!
Your information will be entered into a database, a necessary tool for all extra casting directors.
The registration or processing fee is a one-time fee of $20. This is not a charge to be in any particular movie. You are not paying to be in a movie! This is not an audition.
All reputable extra casting companies, such as Central Casting in Burbank, charge fees and often yearly dues. This is a job placement service for EXTRA work only. Creating and managing a database service is not without cost. To get anyone placed on a set requires an enormous amount of detailed work and follow-up. Its a full-time job placing extras!
